IASSIST Quarterly back issues all online

Dear Friends,

The IASSIST Communications Committee is very happy to announce that the back issues of IQ--ALL of the back issues, back to 1976--are now available on the IASSIST web site.  In the left sidebar where you are able to select from a few back issues, you may recall there is a link at the bottom to More issues.  That link can now transport you back to the early days of the association.  Older issues are wonderful to peruse, offering a window into how far we've come and at the same time putting in perspective the many on-going issues with which we're still grappling, all these years later.  Please take a moment to take a walk down memory lane and reflect on the past and future of IASSIST.  And please congratulate Robin Rice and Harrison Dekker for all their work in getting these issues online.

Data Viz Position at UNC at Chapel Hill

Please see the announcement below for a new position created here in the Libraries at UNC at Chapel Hill.  It will be based in our Digital Research Services Department (you’d get to work with me and a bunch of other great people!) supporting the mission of our Research Hub in Davis Library.  Note that there is a requirement for an advanced degree, but a master’s or PhD in a related subject field is admissible in place of a library degree.  Please let me know if I can answer any questions.

Data Visualization Services Librarian

Available: March 1, 2016

UNC Chapel Hill invites applications for the position of Data Visualization Services Librarian in the Digital Research Services department. Based in the Davis Library Research Hub, the Data Visualization Services Librarian is responsible for expanding data analysis and visualization services in support of teaching and research.

The Data Visualization Services Librarian:

  • Advises, consults, instructs, and serves as technical lead on data visualization projects with UNC students and faculty from all academic disciplines.
  • Identifies, evaluates and recommends new and emerging digital research tools for the Libraries and UNC research community.
  • Develops and supports visualization services in response to current trends, campus needs and Libraries priorities.
  • Shares ideas and concepts effectively across diverse interdisciplinary audiences and serves as the point person for data visualization and analysis efforts in the Libraries.
  • Develops relationships with campus units supporting digital research, including the Odum Institute for Research in Social Science.

The Data Visualization Services Librarian works with staff from the Digital Research Services and Library Information & Technology departments to identify hardware and software needs, and to develop scalable, sustainable practices related to data visualization services. The librarian designs and delivers workshops and training sessions on data visualization tools and methods, and develops a range of instructional materials to support patrons with data visualization needs.

The Data Visualization Services Librarian may share some program coordination responsibilities with other Research Hub staff and may supervise student employees.

Qualifications

Required

  • ALA-accredited master’s degree in Library or Information Science OR advanced degree in Geography, Sociology, Psychology, Design, Informatics, Statistics, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience with data visualization tools and programming libraries.
  • Proficiency with at least one programming language (such as Python, Ruby, JavaScript, Java, R).
  • Ability to use a variety of tools to extract and manipulate data from various sources (such as relational databases, XML, web services and APIs).
  • Demonstrated technical expertise and experience using technology to support research and teaching.
  • Experience providing instruction or research consultations.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong commitment to public service.

Preferred

Experience working effectively with a team to plan and complete projects.

  • Background working in a large academic library.
  • Experience supporting data analysis and visualization in a research setting.
  • Proficiency using tools and programming libraries to support text analysis.
  • Familiarity with geospatial technology.
  • Experience identifying and recommending new tools or technologies.
  • Graphic design skills and proficiency using relevant software.

IQ double issue 38(4)/39(1) is up, and so is vol 39(2)!

Hi folks!  A lovely gift for your reading pleasure over the holidays, we present two, yes, TWO issues of the IASSIST Quarterly.  The first is the double issue, 38(4)/39(1) with guest editors, Joachim Wacherow of GESIS – Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences in Germany and Mary Vardigan of ICPSR at the University of Michigan, USA.  This issue focuses on the Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) and how it makes meta-analysis possible.  The second issue is 39(2), and is all about data:  avoiding statistical disclosure, using data, and improving digital preservation.  Although we usually post the full text of the Editor's Notes in the blog post, it seems lengthy to do that for both issues.  You will find them, though, on the web site: the Editor's Notes for the double issue, and the Editor's Notes for issue 39(2).

Research Data Management Issues Across Environments

Lots of conversations going on these days in different venues where people are asking many of the same questions:  how do we teach researchers about data management with limited staff, and what data management services should we offer?  How do we find sustainable ways to manage data that leverage the efforts of many different repositories, those in government, institutions and disciplinary ones?  How do we coalesce standard practice and reasonable but effective policies at at least the national level and preferably on a global scale?  What roles should governments play?  How much can we as data professionals accomplish on our own?  The Data Management and Curation SIG will host a workshop to talk about these and other issues across different countries and environments next Tuesday. Our speakers will include:

The Council for Community and Economic Research will be offering Basic Analyst Training in March in Washington, DC.  Expensive reg, but looks interesting.

The purpose of this training is to enhance the knowledge, skills and abilities of those new to community and economic development research.  This training provides an overview of key data sources and effective techniques to conduct research in support of economic development strategies.  Participants will discover that while there is lots of data, focusing on a few important elements and using a few proven techniques can provide tremendous insight into the local economic condition and monitoring progress over time.  Training participants also engage in hands-on exercises to find and analyze data within a framework of answering practical, real-world questions that policymakers and practitioners encounter.  For example, when asked to perform quality of life benchmarking, track local trends, or develop information in support of business recruitment, industry cluster building, economic impact assessments, incentive awards, and planning efforts.  Ways to effectively communicate the results from this research to plicy leaders and practitioners are covered. Social Sciences Librarian

Position: Social Sciences Librarian
Available: January 1, 2013

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a creative, enthusiastic, and collaborative Social Sciences Librarian to join the Davis Library Research and Instructional Services Department as the Subject Librarian for the departments of Sociology and Political Science. The Social Sciences Librarian will apply state of the art technology to reference and research work, innovative outreach, evolving collection development, and dynamic data services.

The Social Sciences Librarian will develop and maintain high quality outreach to the faculty and students in departments in the Social Sciences, primarily the departments of Sociology and Political Science; create and deliver innovative and effective instructional resources (workshops, class sessions, course pages, research guides) to enhance learning and research skills; participate in general and specialized reference services (in-person consultations, phone, email, chat) including some weekend work; and collaborate with other librarians to provide data services, concentrating on social science resources including economic and international data sets.

The individual in this position will also select materials relevant to Sociology and Political Science for library purchase, ensuring collections in these areas that meet the University's research and curricular needs; and serve on the Social Sciences collection development team, which collaborates in the evaluation and selection of resources for library purchase.

Librarians at UNC are expected to serve on committees and task forces as needed; be actively involved with local library consortia; participate in regional, national, or international professional and scholarly organizations; and maintain an awareness of emerging research tools, methodologies, and trends in scholarly communication.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant and service-oriented department that supports teaching and research in the humanities and social sciences. The person will report to the Head of the Subject Specialists Section of Davis Research and Instructional Services. The department comprises 14 librarians, 4 support staff, and several student assistants and includes GIS, Data Services, and Government Documents.

Qualifications

Required:
ALA-accredited master's degree in library or information science. Background or experience in the social sciences. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Experience teaching, training or providing instruction. Strong time management and organizational skills, with an ability to set priorities. Commitment to supporting a diverse user population and an ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively with a diverse group of colleagues.

Preferred:
Advanced degree in a social science discipline. Background or experience in the fields of sociology and/or political science. Experience in an academic library. Experience providing outreach services in a subject specialty. Working knowledge of RefWorks and EndNote. Working knowledge of statistical software packages such as SPSS, STATA, SAS or similar products. Experience using data in the social sciences.
