Special Invitation to Heads of Social Science Libraries

the future of data in the global network / IASSIST - CAPDU Annual Conference / Toronto, Canada, May 17-21, 1999]

The line between the materials supported by traditional social science reference librarians and data librarians grows increasingly fuzzy. Many data librarians are now part of library social science reference staffs where they may support documents CD's, financial or health data as well as ICPSR data. Others provide data services in the humanities and the sciences as well as in the social sciences. In some libraries reference librarians provide initial help in locating data and in an increasing number of libraries entries for primary data appear in the public catalog.

At last year's IASSIST meeting at Yale and again at a recent meeting sponsored by the Digital Library Federation in Princeton the advantage of bringing those who who coordinate social science reference services together with data librarians and data archivists was expressed. At the suggestion of Kevin Barry (Princeton), Diane Garner (Harvard) and Julia Wallace (Minnesota) this anniversary meeting of IASSIST proposes a Tuesday evening dinner and a Wednesday lunch to provide an opportunity to discuss incorporating "data" into the social science library. There are numerous conference sessions which will be of interest and since some sessions wil be held at the University of Toronto we hope that it will also be possible to visit the library there.

Please let your registration indicate your interest in meeting with the other heads of Social Science Libraries and particularly your availability for dinner on Tuesday evening.
